The variety of internships available at Steel Beam Theatre offer students a professional experience in a professional setting under the direct supervision of seasoned professionals. Through this internship program, we hope to provide additional hands-on training in the arts to youth in our community and to introduce young people to the viability of careers in theatre, music and other performance activities.
Children's Theatre Assistant Director
Each of our five children's theatre productions during 2007-2008 will have a high school student as Assistant Director. Each show has approximately 20 child performers, and it will be the Assistant Director's job to assist the Director at rehearsals and act as a backstage coordinator at all performances.
Assistant Directors will be responsible for the following duties: attending auditions and acting as audition monitor; compiling the cast contact list; attending all rehearsals and taking attendance; assisting the Director with rehearsal set-up; coaching small groups or scenes; managing props at rehearsals and during the shows; acting as backstage supervisor for the actors including assisting in dressing, setting up the stage, and dressing room clean-up.
This internship provides a comprehensive look at many aspects of putting on a production, and gives the intern hands-on experience in a variety of roles. All activities take place at our theatre or in our separate rehearsal space near the theatre.
Musical Director, Babes in Toyland
This internship will give an accomplished high school pianist the opportunity to work with a Professional Director in our production of Babes in Toyland. Duties will include attending auditions, teaching the audition song to the auditionees, helping to score the singing of the auditionees, attending all rehearsals, teaching the songs, coaching the singers, and playing piano at all rehearsals and performances.
Media Internship
This internship will give a high-school student with an interest in both theatre and journalism and/or creative writing the opportunity to assist Steel Beam Theatre with the media coverage of events at the theatre.
The Executive Director and/or webmaster will give weekly writing assignments for articles to be sent to local newspapers and posted on our website. The intern will also do web research to find new avenues to increase our exposure on the web, and catalog all published articles in a book for archival purposes.
Intern Selection
Potential interns may be identified by the Artistic Director from students who participate in other Steel Beam youth activities (including students who have participated in our children's or Girl Scout badge workshops or our youth improv groups).
Students who identify themselves as interested in pursuing a career in theatre, education or the performing arts are also considered.
High school teachers and directors may also nominate interns.
Interns will be interviewed by the relevant supervisor and/or Executive Director and selected based on their experience and recommendations. In addition, the top three music candidates audition with a prepared piece and sight-reading. (The Executive Director is an accomplished pianist/musician, as are the professionals who direct Steel Beam Theatre musicals.) The candidates for the media internship will be asked for a writing sample.
